Named a 2023 Classic FM Rising Star and One to Watch by Gramophone Magazine, British violinist Mathilde Milwidsky has been praised by The Strad’s Charlotte Gardner for her “perfect intonation and beautiful shaping and colouring, comprehensively nailing each new stylistic and emotional universe as she went”. She was the sole British violinist to be selected for the 2024 Queen Elisabeth Violin Competition, during which the Belgian national newspaper Le Soir praised her performance for its ’mastery and musicality’. In 2019 she was awarded 3rd Prize and a Special Prize at the prestigious Windsor Festival International String Competition and in 2021 and 2022 Mathilde was invited to the Verbier Festival Academy on the Soloist & Chamber Music Programme, as one of only seven violinists chosen worldwide. *Mathilde was to have performed with piano accompaniment from Richard Uttley; however a late change means that the distinguished pianist/composer Huw Watkins will be accompanying her instead. Huw born in Wales in 1976. He studied piano with Peter Lawson and composition with Robin Holloway, Alexander Goehr and Julian Anderson. He currently teaches composition at the Royal Academy of Music. He Huw is much in demand as a soloist and has appeared with the London Sinfonietta, Britten Sinfonia, the BBC Orchestras and Aldeburgh and Cheltenham Festivals. As a chamber partner and composer Huw is equally sought after; as well as regular chamber collaborations and a wide range of commissions he has appeared as Composer in Residence and pianist at festivals including Presteigne and Lars Vogt’s “Spannungen” festival in Germany. We look forward to welcoming the duo to Wakefield.
